Queen's Birthday

Our Queen's Birthday Ball, held on the saturday night of the long weekend in June, is our winter wonderland party.

An intimate and friendly party, it has a special significant to local members as it is the party that marks the birthday of Tropical Fruits. Our very first party was held back in 1988.

We see it also as a tribute to all of the special queens in our lives and community!

QUEENS BIRTHDAY PARTY 2017Hard Queens Poster Web: HARD Queens

This Queens Birthday, Fruits is punking Versailles.
For the final fling of our 20’s, we’re paying a dirty, grimy tribute to our HARD Queens.

For all those queens who have done the HARD yards for the LGBTIQ community, for the HARD work queens, the queens who play HARD and love HARD. For the everyday Queens, the mumma monarchs and the HARD QUEEN in us all. This one’s for you.

The opulence of the French court goes head to head with the anti-establishment riot of the Punk scene in this sexy country party. Silk meets leather, lace meets studs. There’ll be footmen fooling in the shadows, courtiers cuising punks on the dancefloor, kings debauching with an electric guitar by the fire.

Returning to the misty Jiggi valley, we’ll have the place all to ourselves in an old-sckool fruits shindig. The music will be dirty, the songs sexy, and the décor opulent. With all the theatricality and sensuality of Marie Antoinette’s boudoir and the raw edge of the sex pistol’s dressing room, this queen’s birthday will go HARD.

What to wear?
Think Punk Versailles. Think Marie Antoinette and Sid Viscious’ love child. Pull out the leathers and studs, clean the mud off (or rock the mud) your docs. Add some ruffles and some safety pins, some bows and bustles. Think brocade jackets, spiked cuffs, powdered faces and powdered mohawke, corsets and chains. Be a coutier or a king, a deathrocker or street punk. Think warm for outside, hot on the dancefloor.

Woodfired Pizza
Just for us, the team from Jiggi Pizza will be pumping out DELICIOUS wood fired pizzas from the beautiful oven at the hall. They have a range of traditional and gourmet pizzas (veggo and gluten free options) to choose from, in the range of from $8 to $17. He’ll be serving from 4pm, so come before sunset to have a chill out by the fire with pizz and a beer! We’ll have a free tea and coffee station set up too, so whether you are in for dancing and drinks or a cosy chat over a feed (or a bit of both), this is the party for you! Getting to the party
Jiggi Hall is about 20km (25 mins) to the north west of lismore, at Jiggi Hall, 1034 Jiggi Road, Jiggi, NSW 2480.

Driving: From Lismore, head out of town on Nimbin Rd. After 11.5km, turn left at the Goolmangar Store onto Jiggi Rd. The hall is 10.3km along Jiggi Rd, on the right. Park well off the road, but be mindfull of ditches. Carpooling recommended as parking may be limited.

FLOOD NOTE: The Jiggi rd has suffered in the recent floods, so DRIVE CAREFULLY. The bridges along the road have lost road surface and one has cut away on the side, so cross bridges with caution and stay left on the curves.

The bus won’t wait, so be there on time!

Walk-In Camping may be available on-site
We’re sussing out options for camping on site at this event. It’ll be a BYO walk in affair if it goes ahead, but we are determining if the area will be dry enough and if access is safe. Keep an eye on the facebook page for updates on this front.

Dirty, Dirty music
Since we havent had a Hard Labour party in a few years, we’ve really missed the dark and dirty music of our traditional October party. So we’re taking inspiration from those parties of ‘old’, and going dark. So for all of you who arent into the uplifting vocal house side of things, this party is for you. And if you like your music lighter: we’d advise you come early!

We’ll start with some groovy, soulful deep house from DJ LADY K for the sunset hours, and then get progressively dirty as the night wears on! New to our parties, DJ Honey Bear will play a sexy, tribal/tech house set to shake us up and get those hips grinding. DJ Juan Velasco will bring some grimy sydney tech house sounds, and LADY K will take us home with one of her trademark closing sets. Booyah.

About the DJs

If you've been anywhere near Tropical Fruits in recent years, you'll already know about LADY K, cause we love her.  Previously a Lismore local and now living it up in Melboune, DJ LADY K's electronic roots lie in the underground rave and house scenes of Perth in the mid 1990s. After moving to the East Coast, LADY K (aka Kaz Hernandez) has risen to form an integral part of the music scene of the Northern Rivers, NSW. Both an admired DJ and passionate LGBTIQ community member, LADY K's flexible disk and vinyl stylings transcend the boundaries of modern House music; Unconfined are her surges though the borders of Tech and Vocal House, Techno, Electro and across the spectrum of Tribal and Progressive beats.

Check out her music here, and follow her on facebook here.

DJ Juan VelascoJuanVelasco

Coming from a background in Classical Music, Juan has taken to the decks to play Deep UK Garage sounds, underground Tech House and Techno, and chunky Iberican Circuit sounds that you would expect from event giants Extra Dirty, WE Party, SuperMartXé and Matinée.

Juan has played alongside the likes of Alyson Calagna (USA), Mike Kelly (GER), Sveta (AUS), Leomeo (FRA), Feisty (AUS), Manuel Rotondo (ITA), José González (ESP), Danny Serrano (ESP) and DJ Olivian (ITA) at venues such as Macumba (Madrid), ARQ (Sydney), Alpheus (Rome), The Phoenix Underground (Sydney), The Bank Hotel (Sydney), and The Midnight Shift (Sydney).

Most recently, Juan headlined at Gorgeous I Am (Rome, Italy) spinning his tunes to a 4000+ crowd. Juan has hit the decks at Space of Sound, Madrid (Spain), as one of their up-and-coming DJs, as well as taking residency at Extra Dirty, with his Extra Dirty debut in June 2011 alongside Feisty, Leomeo and Sveta. Other residencies Juan holds are Bulge, Room Service and Pump'd, among others.

This is our first party with Juan, and we just can't wait to see what he does with the Fruity dancefloor!

Check out his music here and facebook here.

DJ Honey BearHoneyBear

This local fella is popping his fruity cherry this party, and as an upcoming local we hope youre as keen as we are to try something new and tasty! Owner/operator at Honey Pot Productions, Honey Bear has been playing a diverse range of parties around the Northern Rivers. From Freemantix Productions' 'Beats and Bowls' and 'Triple Treat' to his own 'Psytopia', he brings a pumping and cohesive style to each set.

(This local DJ doesn’t have anything online, but the demos we’ve heard are wicked! Come try something new!)

QUEENS BIRTHDAY PARTY 2016: Sparkling Rainbow Unicorn
Sparkling Rainbow Unicorn

In honour of Queen Lizzie’s 90th Birthday, Tropical Fruits is throwing a rather special 28th birthday bash: Sparkling Rainbow Unicorn.
Having broken free from its bondage in Queen Lizzie’s private zoo, the sparkling rainbow unicorn has trotted down the rainbow and landed in Lismore. Virtue and goodness will not be enough to tame the unicorn.

We will sparkle like a mirrorball made of stars, gleam like a technicolour cartoon rainbow, shine like hyper-dimensional glitterati and be hung like gay unicorns freshly liberated from monarchic chains. So if your inner mystical equine is laying dormant, awaken!

Sparkling Rainbow Unicorn will be a glittering, rainbow pit of delight.

Get ready for some horse play, as we snort, stamp, dance and prance into the night with a stable of stallions, a field of faes, a quirk of queers and a wild of womyn. We will flirt, we will glitter and we will flitter. Then just when you think it can’t get any gayer, neigh! There will be more dancing and prancing until there is glitter sliding from our brows and our unique-horns are shining magic into the night.

... seriously this party is going to sh*t rainbows and sparkle starlight.

Just strap one to your forehead, roll in some glitter and get your pony ass down to Sparkling Rainbow Unicorn!

We are REALLY excited about the tunes for this party! Both DJs are popping their unicorn cherries with Fruits at this event, so this is going to be NEW, FRESH and really ber-loody FUN.

DJ Jim JamDJ Jim Jam
One of the fastest rising DJ’s and producers in Sydney, this UK expat has fast become one of the most sought after talents around. We caught him at Mardi Gras Party a few years ago- and couldn’t get off the dancefloor. Every time we’ve seen him since, his sets have been energetic, playful, sexy and spot-on.
Whether it’s the bouncy, chunky beats; fun familiar big sounds or grooving deep tunes; JimJam has it all. Go check out his Soundcloud and hear it for yourself. This sound is a bit different to our normal take for these small parties: but we reckon it’ll go down a treat.

DJ ElektropandaDJ Elektropanda
This spunky Brissy chick has been on our radar for years: and with the waves she is making up and down the coast, we thought it was high time that the Northern Rivers had a listen!
Elektropanda’s tastes are broad and varied; she’s played everything from kooky dark techno sounds at underground warehouse parties to classic top 40 remixed house tracks at commercial gigs like Brisbane GayDay.
Working with some of our favourite Brisbane DJs, Elektropanda is an up-and-coming DJ who’s totally got our vote. Expect smooth city sounds with an edge of fidget and techno-inspired grunt.
